At one point in its history, as much as 75% of Costa Rica's forest had been cut for agricultural use. Intensive cattle grazing often makes reforestation difficult, as the nutrient rich topsoil washes away without deep plant roots, the soil structure becomes compacted by cow hooves, and the tall grass inhibits seeds from sprouting.
